ChargePoint Introduces Anti-Theft and Anti-Vandalism Solutions for EV Chargers
JANUARY 23rd, 2025
ChargePoint, a leading provider of networked charging solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), has announced two innovative measures to combat the rising issue of charger vandalism and cable theft. The company is introducing a patent-pending cut-resistant charging cable and a new alarm system called ChargePoint Protect.
The cut-resistant cable incorporates strategically placed steel, making it significantly more difficult for vandals to sever while maintaining flexibility and ease of use for drivers. This design has been tested against commonly used tools like wire cutters and bolt cutters, effectively increasing the time and effort required to cut the cables. ChargePoint plans to license this technology to other EV charger manufacturers by mid-2025, aiming to enhance security across the industry.
ChargePoint Protect is a security software upgrade that transforms charging stations into alarm systems. It detects real-time cable tampering and triggers alarms using the station's speakers, screens, and lighting to deter theft and vandalism. The system also sends text and email alerts to designated individuals when tampering is detected. This software update will be available to existing customers at no additional cost starting later this month.
Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, emphasized the company's proactive stance: "We do not view ourselves as victims of vandalism, but rather responsible for solving it, not only for our customers but for the industry." By implementing these solutions, ChargePoint aims to enhance the reliability of EV charging infrastructure and support the broader adoption of electric vehicles.
