My Honest Review of the Rivian Gen 2 Key Fob

As a proud owner of a 2025 Rivian R1S, I’ve been using the updated Rivian Gen 2 Key Fob for a few weeks now, and I wanted to share my thoughts. It’s not every day you think much about a key fob, but since Rivian rolled out this new design for their 2025 and newer R1T and R1S models, I figured it deserved a little attention—especially since I’ve been using it every single day.

First Impressions

When I first unboxed the Gen 2 Key Fob, I was immediately struck by how lightweight it was. It’s not bulky or heavy, which is a huge plus when you’re carrying it around all day. The design is simple but functional. The buttons are clearly labeled with high-contrast icons, making it easy to lock, unlock, and even access the cargo areas. It also comes with a clip that makes it super convenient to attach to a bag or belt loop, which has been a lifesaver on busy days.

What I Like About It

Let’s start with the positives, because honestly, there’s a lot to like about this key fob:

  • It Just Works: This might sound basic, but in the weeks I’ve been using it, it’s never let me down. The buttons are responsive, and I’ve never had to fiddle with it to much to get it to work. It’s reliable, plain and simple. However, since the most recent Rivian software update(2024.51), I have noticed that sometimes it takes a few seconds for the vehicle to recognize that I’m trying to unlock it. I’m not sure if this is due to the vehicle being in "sleep" mode, but it's something I’ve started noticing more frequently.
  • Lightweight and Compact: I’m someone who hates carrying around bulky keychains, so the fact that this key fob is slim and lightweight is a big deal for me. It slips into a pocket easily, or I can clip it onto my bag without even noticing it’s there.
  • Practical Features: One of the coolest features is the Near Field Communication (NFC) tech. If the battery ever dies, I can still unlock my R1S by simply tapping the fob on the driver’s side door. That’s a small detail that makes a big difference when you’re in a pinch.
  • Weather-Ready: With its IP67 rating, it’s resistant to dust and water. I was able to use it in the rain over the weekend here in the Bay Area, and it performed just fine without any issues. While I haven’t dropped it in water or done anything extreme, it's designed to handle accidental exposure to rain, splashes, or even brief submersion—though that should be avoided when possible. This makes it a solid choice for outdoor adventures and unpredictable weather conditions.

What Could Be Better

While the Gen 2 Key Fob has a lot of positives, there are a few areas where it could be improved:

  • Delayed Unlocking: Since the latest software update (2024.51), there are occasional delays when trying to unlock the vehicle. It’s not a huge issue, but it can be frustrating when you’re in a hurry.
  • Build Quality: While it functions well, the key fob doesn’t feel as durable as I’d like. Given Rivian’s premium brand and rugged reputation, I expected something a little sturdier. It’s not bad by any means, but it doesn’t quite match the solid, rugged vibe of the R1S.

Day-to-Day Experience

Using the key fob daily has been a smooth experience overall. Whether I’m unlocking the R1S to load up groceries, or getting ready for a busy day of youth sports, it’s easy and intuitive to use. My schedule often includes taking my kids to hockey, baseball, and soccer—sometimes even hockey and baseball on the same day—so I need quick and easy access to my vehicle to load up all their gear.

The key fob has made these transitions seamless, especially when my hands—and my kids' hands—are full carrying their sports gear, whether it's hockey sticks, baseball bags, or soccer equipment. Not having to fumble with my phone or keep the Rivian app open all day is a huge plus. I can also easily hand the fob to my kid when they need to access the vehicle, making it even more convenient for our busy schedule.

The clip is super handy when I’m out running errands, or moving between games and practices, allowing me to attach it to my belt loop or coaches bag without worrying about misplacing it. The buttons are easy to find and press, even when I’m juggling other things in my hands.

Final Thoughts

While it does carry a $250.00 price tag, the Rivian Gen 2 Key Fob does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and it does it well. It’s reliable, lightweight, and packed with practical features that make owning a Rivian just a little bit easier. While I’d love to see a more durable build in future versions, the current design still gets the job done without any major complaints.

If you’re driving a 2025 or newer R1T or R1S, I think you’ll appreciate the convenience and ease of use this key fob offers. It’s one of those small things that just works in the background but makes a big difference in your day-to-day experience.
