How Rivian is Speeding Up Self-Driving Tech with AWS

Rivian is taking a big step forward in improving its autonomous driving technology, and it all comes down to how fast they can process data. Testing self-driving capabilities generates huge amounts of data, and getting that data from vehicles to engineers quickly is critical. That’s where Amazon Web Services (AWS) comes in.

The Problem: Slow Data Transfers Were Holding Back Progress

Rivian’s test vehicles collect an incredible amount of driving data every day, helping them fine-tune autonomous driving features. But here’s the challenge: getting that data from the vehicles to Rivian’s systems for analysis took too long. In the past, Rivian had to physically transport storage drives or have vehicles return to specific locations to upload data, slowing down the process.

Before: Test fleet driving to OEM office location to upload data or shipping the SSDs. Now: With AWS Data Transfer Terminal, the vehicles drive to the nearest upload location.

The Solution: AWS Data Transfer Terminal

To fix this, Rivian partnered with AWS to use their Data Transfer Terminal—a high-speed, secure solution for transferring massive amounts of data quickly. Now, instead of waiting hours (or even days) for data uploads, Rivian can send crucial driving data to the cloud in minutes. This means engineers can analyze it faster, make improvements, and push updates to test vehicles more efficiently.

Why This Matters for Rivian’s Future

By solving the data transfer bottleneck, Rivian is speeding up the development of its autonomous driving technology. Faster data means:

  • Quicker software improvements for better self-driving features.
  • More efficient testing, keeping vehicles on the road instead of waiting for uploads.
  • A better experience for future Rivian drivers as technology gets refined faster.

This is yet another way Rivian is leveraging smart partnerships to stay ahead in the EV world. As their self-driving technology evolves, expect to see even more improvements making their way into Rivian vehicles!
