Rivian to Launch Hands-Free Highway Driving for Gen 2 R1 Vehicles

Rivian is about to take highway driving to the next level with the launch of hands-free driving for Gen 2 R1 vehicles. This new feature is part of Rivian’s advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) and is designed to make long highway drives more comfortable and less stressful.

What Is Hands-Free Driving?

This system will allow drivers to travel on approved highways without keeping their hands on the steering wheel. Using a combination of cameras, sensors, and GPS data, the system can maintain lane positioning, adjust speed, and navigate curves. However, drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control if needed.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Lane-Centered Driving: Maintains the vehicle’s position within its lane.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: Adjusts speed to maintain a safe following distance.
  • Curve Navigation: Handles gentle highway curves without driver input.
  • Driver Monitoring: Ensures the driver stays attentive, even when hands-free.

When and How Will It Be Available?

Rivian plans to roll out this feature in the coming weeks through an over-the-air (OTA) software update, which means eligible owners won’t need to visit a service center.

Why This Matters

Hands-free driving represents a significant step forward in Rivian’s mission to enhance the driving experience with advanced technology. By reducing driver fatigue during long trips, this feature promises to make highway travel safer and more enjoyable.
