Rivian CEO Reveals Game-Changing ‘Maximus’ Drive Unit for R2

MARCH 5th, 2025

Rivian redcudes total welds per stator by almost 91%

Rivian is pushing the boundaries of EV powertrain technology with its latest breakthrough—the Maximus drive unit. Announced by CEO RJ Scaringe on social media, this next-generation drive unit for the upcoming R2 platform brings major manufacturing improvements that could drive down costs significantly.

One of the most notable advancements is the shift to continuous winding in the stator, reducing the total number of welds per stator assembly from 264 (on the Enduro drive unit) to just 24. This streamlined design not only simplifies production but also enhances efficiency and reliability.

Scaringe’s excitement about the cost savings on R2 is a promising sign for potential buyers, suggesting Rivian is working toward more affordable and scalable EV solutions without compromising performance. With the highly anticipated R2, the Maximus drive unit could be a key component in making Rivian’s next-generation EVs more accessible than ever.

Stay tuned for more details on how Rivian’s Maximus drive unit will shape the future of electric adventure!
